Three sushi plates completed for a wedding gift. Base glass used in all three plates are identical. The back surface was flipped on one of the plates. A chinese wedding symbol was incorporated into one of the plates using 96 COE flat stringers preformed into the symbol and fused into the glass. This created an instability which caused the plate to break. The plate was successfully rehealed. However in the slumpint phase, the plate was slightly too large for the mold and cracked again, probably because of the original instabilitly. In healing the glass, contaminants were introduced creating a dirty appearance. Subsequent firings with superficial frit created a very interesting effect in the center plate. The backside of that same plate took on an antique characteristic - almost like blue stone.
There are several glass manufacturers who provide standard glass with a guaranteed coefficient of expansion. This glass is fairly reliable to work with and is more commonly used for functional glass.
Functional glass is usually dishwasher safe, though often not microwave or oven safe.
