Working with Bought Glass
Bought glass comes with a specific coefficient of expansion - meaning that there is some predictability in how it will behave ... whether it will stick together and flow nicely. However, there are always unknowns. Will the blue react with the white because there are metals in the glass? Will one of the glasses melt more slowly because of its chemical compostion or colore? This is one of the most fun aspects of working with glass - the unknown composition that happens between different elements. When making plates that will go in the dishwasher or other functional art that needs to be stable, purchasing glass is the safest route.
