Trying new things

chandelier pieces

The most fun part about working in the shop is trying new things. Experimenting with materials, firing schedules, and new techniques can result in some really beautiful pieces and some spectacular failures. Most recently, I've been experimenting with:

  • Drop out vases The results are similar to those you can achieve with blowing glass by using gravity in the kiln to create the stretching and hollowing. It is a difficult technique resulting in lots of broken pieces. Lots to perfect.
  • Reforming an old chandelier One of our friends lost a chandelier when it fell from the ceiling. I've been remelting the individual leaded crystal pieces. Each has a unique shape and sound. I'm not sure exactly what it will morph into, but it's interesting.
  • Back splashes and architectural tiles The recycled glass tiles show great promise incorporated into the home. Pictures to come.

The glass is old. The artist is old. And the techniques are old. Work the glass.
